Hand Effigy Vessel with Stirrup Spout
c. 200 BC
Vicus-Moche Culture, North Coast Peru
Ceramic, slip painted in brown and beige
The Vicus-Moche style is the link between the classic Moche style and earlier artistic traditions from Chorrera and Chavin. The Vicus-Moche style introduced human representation to the ceramic work of their time and region. They produced vessels depicting humans such as warriors, old men, and musicians. This hand vessel illustrates their fascination with various parts of the body. The stirrup spout, so named because of its unique shape, is integrated into the design as if it were a natural part of the hand.
