FELINE FIGURE VESSEL WITH LOOPED TAIL AND BRIDGE SPOUT
700-300 BC
Paracas Culture, South Coast Peru
ceramic, with incised design and painted with red, green and yellow
Because the Paracas region along the southern coast of Peru is very dry, artifacts found in this region are often well preserved. The Paracas, ancestors of the Nazca, often created vessels with animal imagery which are characterized by geometric or stylized design. The feline images such as this one are frequently depicted with jutting fangs.
